'Free Guy' Almost Had An Entirely Different Ending

Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer, had a amazing weekend at the box office, bringing in $28.4 million for its opening on the big screen. The earnings made the film the #1 movie at the theaters!

A screenwriter for the film, Matt Lieberman, is now opening up about how the movie almost ended in an entirely different way.

During an interview with Collider, Matt opened up about the original ending and revealed that saw Millie (Comer) and Guy (Reynolds) ending up together, instead of her getting together with Keys (Joe Keery).

“In the original script, he ends up with Millie,” he shared. “They maintain their relationship into whatever the sequel will be. But Ryan and Shawn [Levy, director] felt that it needed that Ghost moment. Nobody could really rationalize a person having an extended stay as bit and bytes.”

He went on, adding that the writers “thought, ‘What’s the Ghost moment?’ It was definitely tweaked from the first iteration of the movie. How does Guy end up, after saying goodbye to Millie? How do you wanna leave Guy? We knew that audiences would just wanna know that he’s gonna be okay and that he’s happy, and I think they nailed it.”

The ending now sees Millie ending up with Keys, who is the creator of Guy. She realizes that Keys has always loved her, and the two of them get together in the real world.

Meanwhile, Guy is able to continue to hang out with his best friend Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) in their new digital world.
