Princess Mako of Japan is married!
The niece of the Emperor Naruhito wed her her college sweetheart, commoner Kei Komuro, on Tuesday (October 26) in a subdued ceremony at the local ward office.
As the law in Japan requires a princess to leave the imperial family upon marriage to a commoner, Princess Mako has giving up her royal titles in order to marry Kei.

She also turned down a $1.3 million payout from the Japanese government, which is traditionally paid to royal women who no longer have their royal status when they get married.
At a press event held after the wedding, the couple spoke with journalists about their decision to get married. You can see all the photos from the event in the gallery below.
“I am very sorry for the inconvenience caused and I am grateful for those … who have continued to support me,” Princess Mako said, per the BBC. “For me, Kei is irreplaceable — marriage was a necessary choice for us.”
The pair’s relationship was met with resistance from the public and local media, with the palace announcing that Mako had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the intense media coverage, per People.
“I love Mako. We only get one life, and I want us to spend it with the one we love,” Kei said. “I feel very sad that Mako has been in a bad condition, mentally and physically, because of the false accusations.”
Princess Mako and Kei met while attending a study-abroad event during their time at International Christian University in Tokyo.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
