'Grey's Anatomy Casts E.R. Fightmaster as First Non-Binary Doctor

Grey’s Anatomy is adding to the cast!

E.R. Fightmaster is joining the long-running series as Dr. Kai Bartley in a recurring role, marking the first non-binary actor to play a doctor on the show, Variety reported.

Kai first appeared in Season 18 on Episode 3, as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was contacted by a well-funded Minnesota hospital that wants her to join their mission to cure Parkinson’s Disease. Meredith asked neurosurgeon Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) to join her to help with the decision, and they met Kai, who is part of the research team in Minnesota.

Kai will return for the November 11 episode when the show returns after two weeks off, as well as a few more episodes before the midseason finale airs in December.

“They are dedicated to their craft and extremely talented at what they do. Confident as hell and able to make even the most detailed and mundane science seem exciting and cool, Kai and Amelia bond over their shared love of medicine and the brain,” the ABC character description reads.

Some fans on Twitter are also happily celebrating the chemistry between Kai and Amelia, and already hoping there is a romance between the two.

Four former stars are returning for Season 18 so far!
