Disney is the studio releasing Ryan Reynolds‘ movie Free Guy, but you won’t see it on Disney+ anytime soon.
The movie is getting an exclusive theatrical release for 45 days before it will be released on premium VOD, which means you’ll probably be able to rent the movie for $20 starting on September 27.
Once the film is ready to hit a streaming platform, it will be going to HBO.

Free Guy was originally part of the 20th Century Fox film slate and Disney acquired the movie when it purchased the studio. Fox has had a deal with HBO for 40 years and it will expire in early 2022, but until then, all Fox theatrical releases have their first pay window on HBO.
When Disney CEO Bob Chapek was asked why Free Guy wouldn’t be released on Disney+ Premier Access like recent movies Black Widow and Jungle Cruise, he hinted at that deal.
“We acquired [Free Guy] under a different distribution assumption and set of agreements. We don’t have the degree of freedom to do [a Premier Access release] on Free Guy,” he said (via Variety).
It’s not clear when Free Guy will be available on HBO and HBO Max, but it will be on there before Disney+.
