Tokyo Olympic Games Will Not Allow Spectators Due to Rise in COVID-19 Cases

Olympics Minister Tamayo Marukawa has confirmed that the Tokyo Olympics will not allow spectators due to a rise in COVID-19 cases in Japan.

A state of emergency has been declared in Tokyo and is expected to stay in place through the 2020 Olympics. The 2020 Olympics were supposed to take place last year, but were postponed to 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Taking into consideration the effect of coronavirus variants and not to let the infections spread again to the rest of the nation, we need to strengthen our countermeasures,” Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said of the state of emergency, which will continue until at least August 22.

The Olympics are set to take place from July 23 through August 8.

Previously, only foreign fans were not allowed at the Games this year to mitigate the spread of the virus.
