'Mare of Easttown' Stars & Showrunner Talk Possibilities of a Second Season

The series finale of Mare of Easttown airs tonight on HBO, and while fans might have already figured out what the end result will be, most are still wondering if the show might expand to a second season.

Stars of the show, including Angourie Rice, as well as showrunner Brad Ingelsby and director Craig Zobel, have opened up about if the show is headed that way and if they’d want that at all.

Turns out there won’t be any more seasons, episodes or specials for the limited series.

Brad spoke to Collider about it all and revealed that he “very much had to have the ending in my head, even prior to starting the opening scene.”

He added, “If you know where it ends, then you can cheat some things and have the audience leaning here when they should be leaning there. It was a learning experience and I hope we’ve pulled it off.”

In a separate interview with IndieWire, Brad also said that “when you get to the final episode of the show, you have to stick the landing. I [always] knew exactly where it ended and then it was just a game of how do you plant the seeds and the payoffs and set it up in a way where the audience isn’t feeling cheated in the end.”

Craig Zobel, who directed the series, also told MovieMaker magazine that seven episodes was perfect for this story.

“We didn’t make it more episodes just to kind of pad it out. So at least I feel strong in that way,” he said.

However, Angourie, who plays Kate Winslet‘s daughter Siobhan Sheehan, did at first want a second season.

“My immediate response is, ‘Yeah!’” she told Elle magazine. But then, she changed her mind: “The more I think about it, the more I think, actually, I’m so happy to leave those characters where they are. The more I think about it, the more I’m like, ‘No, no, no.’ I kind of love the power that this standalone story has.”

Angourie added in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, that it’d be like “asking for Season 3 of Fleabag. It’s perfect the way it ended. And I think the same can be said for Mare of Easttown, in that, of course, I will always feel love and attachment to these characters in this world.”

“It’s not even that the end is an ending necessarily. It’s more of a departure from the characters. It’s letting them go. They will be okay without us watching. We know that they’re on the path to healing.”
