British music producer and musician SOPHIE has died at the young age of 34.
The rising star passed away after an accident that took place in Athens, Greece on Saturday morning (January 30), the musician’s publicist announced in a statement.
The statement reads, “It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you that musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 4am in Athens, where the artist had been living, following a sudden accident. At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We would also ask for respect for her fanbase, and to treat the private nature of this news with sensitivity.”
SOPHIE‘s family also released a statement through the management team.
“Tragically our beautiful SOPHIE passed away this morning after a terrible accident,” they said. “True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us. The family thank everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.”
Sophie Xeon was born and raised in Scotland and started releasing music in 2013. The music star’s debut album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides was released in 2018 and it was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category. SOPHIE worked with such artists as Madonna, Charli XCX, Kim Petras, and Vince Staples.
SOPHIE was transgender and discussed gender identity while speaking to Paper magazine in 2018.
“Transness is taking control to bring your body more in line with your soul and spirit so the two aren’t fighting against each other and struggling to survive … It means you’re not a mother or a father – you’re an individual who’s looking at the world and feeling the world,” the musician, who did not use gendered pronouns, said.
We’re sending our thoughts and condolences to SOPHIE‘s loved ones during this difficult time.
