Prince Charles might have a new role next year – King.
According to a respected royal biographer, Robert Jobson, who is one of the leading royal commentators, shared that he still believes Queen Elizabeth II might abdicate her role in favor of her eldest son, the Prince of Wales.
“I still firmly believe when the Queen becomes 95, that she will step down,” Robert shared while speaking on True Royalty TV.
Another royal reporter for Newsweek, Jack Royston, added that he thinks “she won’t want to, but realistically she will get to a point where she has handed over everything to Charles and then how do you look your son in the eye and tell him he is not going to be King?”
In the past few years, Elizabeth has stepped back from certain roles and regulated them to either Charles, Prince William, and Princess Anne.
However, the rumor of her abdicating in order for Charles to become King has been around for quite a while, and Elizabeth has not done so in any of them. She could make him Prince Regent though, which means he would step in should his 95-year-old mother become incapacitated.
“The Queen will certainly never abdicate. At the moment she is in excellent health and so she won’t be giving this serious thought right now. In fact, I know she has told friends that she wants to live to 100 like her mother,” respected royal journalist Phil Dampier also shared in another interview.
He adds, “The only reason a regency would ever be contemplated if is she became seriously ill, either mentally or physically. But I don’t believe she would consider an artificial cut off time such as reaching 95. She will consider the situation as each year passes.”
The most recent monarch who abdicated in favor of their eldest child was Juan Carlos I of Spain. King Felipe is reigning monarch now.
