Justin Bieber opens up about mental health, suicidal thoughts in candid documentary

Justin Bieber doesn't hold back in his new YouTube special Justin Bieber: Next Chapter, which premiered on Friday.

In the documentary, the singer opens up about his mental health and how he went through a severe period of depression while struggling with fame and the pressure to be "this star who is supposed to have it all together".

"When I was 15 … I was so surrounded, millions of people in the audience, but I still felt lonely. I still felt misunderstood. I still felt hurt," he says. These emotions helped inspire his new single, 'Lonely'.

Bieber shot to fame at just 13 years of age, after uploading videos of himself singing, which were discovered by talent agent Scooter Braun. In 2009, Bieber released his debut EP My World.

"I just had no idea what was to come. I had no idea that this life would take me by storm. I had no idea that I would get sucked up by all of this."

The 'Baby' singer reflects in the documentary on how much hate he received from the start of his career, and how it affected him while growing up.

"There were so many people who were just so mean," he recalls. "Random people saying like, 'You suck! You look like a girl!' I would shake it off and act like it didn't bother me, but that stuff bothered me. And then it affected how I acted and how I treated other people, and it's just this ongoing cycle of, like, hurt people, hurt people. I was just this young kid."

He also spoke about the pressure he felt to keep it all together while inside he was struggling and lonely.

"I think that there was times where I was really, really suicidal, like, really like, 'Man, is this pain ever gonna go away?'" he remembers. "It was so consistent. The pain was so consistent. I was just suffering."

In 2014, Bieber made headlines for his "bad boy" behaviour. He was filmed urinating in a bucket, was arrested for drunk driving, and caught saying the N-word. After a few years of struggling, the singer cancelled his world tour and took a break for the sake of his mental health.

He says that it was a hard decision for him to make, to step back and focus on himself, but ultimately one that was necessary.

"It's so hard to show your weakness," he says in Next Chapter, "but acknowledging your weakness allows you to grow."

He also spoke about his wife, Hailey Bieber. "[She] really empowers me and enables me to feel like, 'Justin, I love you for you and you are enough,'" he told viewers. "That enables me to go into my workspace and be confident and feel like I'm enough."

The couple married in September 2018, and had an official ceremony one year later.

The Canadian singer also opened up about how their relationship has strengthened this year.

"[Quarantine] allowed us to take a step back and focus on each other. That was really a beautiful thing."

He also shared their plans to have kids in the near future, revealing that he plans to get their faces tattooed on his back.

"My back is still pretty open," he said while talking about his many tattoos. "And I don't have kids yet. So, I'm thinking of getting their portraits on my back."
