Her appearance comes three weeks after first sparking concerns about her whereabouts following her allegations of sexual assault against a former vice premier.

The IOC summarized her remarks, including sharing a photo of the tennis player on a TV screen speaking to the group’s president, Thomas Bach, smiling with stuffed animal toys in the background.

“At the beginning of the 30-minute call, Peng Shuai thanked the IOC for its concern about her well-being. She explained that she is safe and well, living at her home in Beijing, but would like to have her privacy respected at this time. That is why she prefers to spend her time with friends and family right now. Nevertheless, she will continue to be involved in tennis, the sport she loves so much,” the organization said in a statement.

Emma Terho, Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, said: “I was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was doing fine, which was our main concern. She appeared to be relaxed. I offered her our support and to stay in touch at any time of her convenience, which she obviously appreciated.”

People around the world expressed concern for the Chinese tennis star, who spoke out on November 2 in a message that was posted to her Weibo account, accusing Zhang Gaoli of sexually assaulting her while he was in office. They were in an on-off relationship at the time. Her message was quickly deleted from Weibo and government censors have blocked any coverage of the topic in China. Many celebrities spoke out in the weeks since.
