At the end of the series, Sohyun’s baby Toughie mercifully survives the demonstration after getting the decree moments after being born days ago. It came at a cost of a sacrifice: Sohyun and her husband Youngjae, as well as lawyer Min Hyejin, do what they can to fight off the Hell monsters, eventually securing the baby between them as the monsters eviscerate the mother and father, sparing the baby.
The man who hosted the family turns out to be Lee Dongwook, the crazed Arrowhead livestreamer, who it is revealed had received a decree in the past that he would die in three years’ time and stopped doing streams.
When he calls New Truth’s Chairman Jeongchil to confirm his suspicion that it was an accidental decree, as he has no sins, he is told by the Chairman that he’s a messiah (who makes it up on the spot), and that God chose him for special mission. His demonstration is scheduled for five minutes after Toughie’s, so he plans to make it look like the newborn’s decree was fake, and that God was coming for him as a sacrifice.
He then attacks Youngjae, Hyejin, Sohyun, and Toughie, and after Sohyun and Youngjae’s sacrifice, he attempts to kill Toughie, but Hyejin tackles him and the demons show up to bring him to Hell.
The witnesses also seem to be distrusting of the New Truth Society at the very end, turning on the deacons upon realizing the baby was free from sin, so these were not God’s judgements after all, and that the system was imperfect if the baby didn’t actually die.
Deacon Yuji lashes out at an older man who confronts him as a liar, beating him unconscious, and he is arrested by a police officer for battery.
Hyejin then leaves with Toughie, getting into a cab. The driver recognizes her and says he will bring her to safety.
And in the most intriguing part of the finale, the question of whether these people actually are going to Hell gets shaken up by a shocking reveal: Park Jungja comes back to life.
At the New Truth’s “sacred” tourist attraction, the corpse of Jungja – the woman whose demonstration was aired live – suddenly reanimates and comes back to life, as she wakes up, naked and alone.
That leads to the question of whether others will soon return, including Chairman Jeong, the person who started the New Truth society. It’s also possible that Sohyun and Youngjae’s deaths, which were not given in a decree, may have shifted something in the balance of demonstrations. It’s also not yet known how society will react to the return of Jungja, and whether it will help or hurt the New Truth’s religious fanatic following.
Season 2 has not yet been announced yet, but there’s more than enough unanswered questions for a follow-up season!
In the meantime, check out the most popular titles on Netflix!
