Netflix Employee Leaks Info on How Much the Company Paid for 'Squid Game,' Dave Chappelle Special & More

An employee who works for Netflix has been fired after leaking information on how much the company paid for various programs, including the hit series Squid Game and the recent Dave Chappelle special.

The unnamed employee shared “confidential, commercially sensitive information outside the company” and was fired for their actions. The employee reportedly leaked the info as a form of protest against the Chappelle special, which has been condemned as being transphobic.

“We understand this employee may have been motivated by disappointment and hurt with Netflix, but maintaining a culture of trust and transparency is core to our company,” Netflix said in a statement after the employee was fired.

An article in Bloomberg this week revealed that Netflix paid more money for the Chappelle special than they paid for the new series Squid Game.

The new Chappelle special The Closer cost the company $24.1 million. It was also reported that Netflix paid $23.6 million for the comedian’s 2019 special Sticks & Stones.

All nine episodes of Squid Game cost the company $21.4 million to make and the series recently earned the distinction of the biggest launch in Netflix history.

In contrast to the amount of money it cost to obtain the Chappelle special, Bo Burnham‘s acclaimed comedy special Inside only cost the company $3.9 million.

Netflix reportedly has a measurement scale to determine the “impact value” of the amount of money they spend on each project. If a project reaches a score of 1, it has hit the break-even point.

Bloomberg reports that Chappelle‘s Sticks & Stones special received an impact value score of 0.8, which means it cost more than the value it generated. Burnham‘s Inside special reached a score of 2.8, which means it was very profitable.
