Scarlett Johansson's Lawyer Hits Back at Disney After the Studio Made First Move in Lawsuit

A lawyer for Scarlett Johansson is speaking out in response to Disney making their first move in the lawsuit that she filed against the studio.

In case you missed the previous news, Scarlett is suing Disney over a financial dispute with the release of her movie Black Widow.

Scarlett claims that she’s missing out on profits that she would have earned if the movie was given an exclusive theatrical release, instead of the hybrid release it was given in both theaters and Disney+ Premier Access.

Deadline reports that Disney responded to the lawsuit on Friday night (August 20) and requested that the case go into arbitration.

Disney’s lawyers say that it was previously “agreed that all claims ‘arising out of, in connection with, or relating to’ Scarlett Johansson’s acting services for Black Widow would be submitted to confidential, binding arbitration in New York.” Now, they are moving to take the case behind closed doors.

In response to Disney’s move, Scarlett‘s lawyer released a statement.

“After initially responding to this litigation with a misogynistic attack against Scarlett Johansson, Disney is now, predictably, trying to hide its misconduct in a confidential arbitration,” lawyer John Berlinski told Deadline.

He continued, “Why is Disney so afraid of litigating this case in public? Because it knows that Marvel’s promises to give Black Widow a typical theatrical release ‘like its other films’ had everything to do with guaranteeing that Disney wouldn’t cannibalize box office receipts in order to boost Disney+ subscriptions. Yet that is exactly what happened – and we look forward to presenting the overwhelming evidence that proves it.”
