Demi Lovato is getting candid about their split from Max Ehrich.
The 29-year-old “Sorry Not Sorry” performer spoke at The 19th Represents Summit about their experience coming out as non-binary this week.
During their chat with host Kate Sosin, Demi opened up about the role the pandemic played in their journey of self-discovery, as well as their breakup with their ex- fiance Max Ehrich.

Demi explained that the pandemic “had everything to do with it,” because at the beginning of the global lockdown in March 2020 they were “starting to identify as non-binary.”
However, they added that their relationship was also starting to get serious around that time.
“Then I met someone and I got into this straight relationship, and that was great, but that led me to ignoring all the parts of myself that I didn’t think were digestible for my partner at the time, who ended up becoming my fiancĂ©,” they said.
“In hindsight, the dissolvement of that relationship was actually probably the best thing that’s happened to me, because of what that led inside of myself.”
The performer added that they were able to “stand on [their] own two feet” after the breakup, “without needing someone else to validate [them] or to make [them] feel accepted.”
“When I said goodbye to that relationship, I also said goodbye to everything that was holding me back from being my most authentic self,” Demi said.
That was the point where Demi “really started to identify as non-binary binary” with close friends and family. “It was the dissolvement of all things that had held me back from identifying as the person I do today,” they reflected.
They went on to say that their journey of self-exploration is likely to continue “forever.”
Demi recently revealed that they have filmed their first ever sex scene!
