Camila Cabello is speaking out after seeing the backlash to one particular background dancer during her performance on The Tonight Show, which happened on Friday, July 23.
The 24-year-old singer promoted her new single, “Don’t Go Yet”, and after her spicy performance, fans took issue with one background dancer who looked to have their skin darkened with makeup.

Camila responded to fans and critics accusing her and the dancer of blackface for the performance, and explained those characterizations simply weren’t true. It was intended for that character to have an obvious fake spray tan.
“hey! so this dude was just supposed to be a white man with a terrible spray tan. we purposefully tried to pull together a multicultural group of performers, the expectation was not that everyone in the performance needed to be Latin,” Camila shared in her note via the iPhone Notes app.
She added, “There are white people, African American people, latin people, etc. and so the point wasn’t to try to make everyone look Latin either. There are a lot of people in the performance who are not. The point was to try to make each person look like an over the top ’80s character just like in the video, including a white dude with a terrible orange spray tan.”
Camila also shared a screenshot of a post that the dancer in question made on Instagram Story, where he shared a selfie along with the caption, “In case you missed my spray tan last night on @jimmyfallon with @camila_cabello.”
