Alexandra Breckenridge Speaks Out on That 'Virgin River' Cliffhanger in the Season 3 Finale

Alexandra Breckenridge is speaking out to share her thoughts on Mel’s big cliffhanger in the season three finale of Netflix’s Virgin River.

The third season of the hit show began streaming on Friday (July 9) and so many fans have likely finished all of the episodes already.

We learned some big news for Mel at the end of the season and the final episode ended with a big cliffhanger that will leave fans on the edge of their seats until season four.

During the middle of the season, Mel and Jack (Martin Henderson) had a brief breakup and during that split, she went to Los Angeles and visited the clinic where her dead husband’s frozen sperm was located. She gets inseminated with the sperm, but then she reunites with Jack by the end of the season.

We learn in the finale that Mel is pregnant, but we don’t know if the father is Jack or her dead husband.

“She wants a baby so badly that she goes to the fertility clinic and gets inseminated with her dead husband’s sperm. That’s a huge thing for a person to go and do,” Alexandra told E! News.

Alexandra talked about how she relates to the emotional stress that Mel was going through during the breakup with Jack, which led to her choice to have a baby on her own.

“I’ve been through a lot, and what I’ve noticed is that people who are under extreme emotional circumstances just aren’t thinking clearly. So it kind of makes sense to me that she decides to go through with it, because she doesn’t believe that Jack’s gonna ever come back to her,” she said.

So, who will the father be? Alexandra knows who the writers want it to be, but she says she “really hope[s] that it’s Jack’s baby.”

If it’s not his baby, Alexandra said, “It would be immensely difficult. That would be extremely challenging, especially for Jack. If he’s gonna stick around, if he’s devoted to Mel, that’s gonna be hard to have a baby that’s her dead husband’s baby. That’s just, like, asking a lot.”

The creator of Virgin River has explained why one of the characters has a decreased presence in the third season.
