Prince Harry Reached Out to James Corden to Do 'Late Late Show' Video - Here's Why

RuPaul asked James Corden how he secured a special feature with Prince Harry for The Late Late Show.

You may remember, “An Afternoon With Prince Harry & James Corden,” which has been viewed more than 25 million times, debuted in February 2021 just a few weeks before Oprah’s big interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

During a For Your Consideration event, James explained to RuPaul (via THR), “There was a certain time in London if you went out long enough and ended up drinking long enough, you’d probably bump into Prince Harry once in a while.” He added he had “always been very, very fond of him” and even did a 10-minute performance at his wedding to the Duchess in 2018.

He added that Prince Harry had always promised to come “do something” on the late night show. Prince Harry ended up reaching out to set something up when he was fully settled in Southern California!

Executive producer of the show, Ben Winston, said, “He said, ‘We’re coming out of lockdown, I’m in L.A., do you think we should plan something fun to almost cheer everybody up in a way. And then, obviously, as soon as you say something like that to us and our team, our brains go crazy.”

As for why they decided to drop the interview as a surprise versus publicize that Prince Harry would be on the show, Ben added, “Everybody had an opinion of that Oprah interview and they hadn’t seen it. The British media were full of [opinions] about whether they should do it or shouldn’t do it. Was it good? Was it bad? We were like, ‘Let’s stay out of this. Let’s just drop it and no one can write an opinion piece without everybody having the ability to see it and judge it with their own eyes.”
