Ellie Kemper is currently a trending topic on social media after fans dug up something from her past that is causing controversy.
The 41-year-old actress is best known for playing Erin Hannon on The Office and Kimmy Schmidt on the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
It was discovered that Ellie was reportedly crowned the queen of the 1999 Veiled Prophet Ball when she was 19. The annual debutante ball is held in St. Louis and the name of the event was changed to Fair Saint Louis in 1992.

An article in The Atlantic, which was written back in 2014, revealed how the debutante ball was founded by wealthy White elites back in 1878 and “emphasized the existing power structure.”
An anonymous person played the “Veiled Prophet” at each ball and that person, who was chosen by local elites, got to choose the Queen of Love and Beauty at each ball. Ellie received this title back in 1999, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. An article from the paper, written in December 1999, states that she was “the 105th young woman to be so honored by the Veiled Prophet organization. She wore a white satin square-neck gown designed by Tomasina and purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue.”
There is also a photo of her being crowned at the event.
Illustrations of the early Veiled Prophets have a striking resemblance to members of the Ku Klux Klan, though it has been pointed out that KKK members did not begin wearing white hoods and robes until 1915.
Reports say that Black members were not allowed into the VP organization until 1979, though many of those members were reportedly embarrassed by the organization. Despite the name change of the event, the “Veiled Prophet Ball” is still held every year.

People forget that Ellie Kemper is from old money. The Kemper family is still one of the richest families in Missouri. Also fun fact: Fair St. Louis is hosted by the Veil Prophet Organization. It runs deep https://t.co/ZCxvdO9Ymr

the Ellie Kemper thing is hilarious but you people don't really think she's like, a secret nazi agent and not just from some dumb ass town where they make you square dance right

it really is something that Ellie Kemper was the star of a tv show about a woman who leaves a racist cult and tries to rebrand herself while pretending it never happened. no reason why I'm bringing this up of course.

Can't wait for the inevitability of Ellie Kemper's fellow co-stars to come out and try to defend her past like the Marvel bois did with Crisp Rat. I'm sorry, there's no way to defend a white woman who won a KKK pageant at 19 and went on to have a career in tv and film.
