The highly anticipated movie musical In the Heights will be released in theaters in June and the first reactions from early screenings are in!
Step Up and Crazy Rich Asians‘ Jon M. Chu directed the film, which is based on the Broadway show written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes.
Here is the film’s official synopsis: “Lights up on Washington Heights…The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.”
Anthony, best known for his work in Broadway’s Hamilton and the movie A Star is Born, is joined in the movie by Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephanie Beatriz, Dascha Polanco, Gregory Diaz IV, Jimmy Smits, and Lin as the Piragua Guy.
The early reviews on Twitter are mostly raves, with many saying it’s not only one of the best movie musicals in year, but one of the best films in a while. There is even awards buzz brewing with many saying that Olga, who is reprising her Tony-nominated work from Broadway, should get a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars.
In the Heights is also getting praise for giving the Latinx community the representation they deserve on the big screen. Make sure to watch the movie when it’s released in theaters and on HBO Max on June 11!

We got to see an early screening of #InTheHeightsMovie and as someone who LOVES the musical I was absolutely enchanted! Anthony Ramos is a sexy lil nugget as Usnavi and Olga Merediz and Daphne Rubin-Vega were outstanding! So joyful and passionate. I hope people love it.

Social embargo is up so I'm shouting from my metaphorical fire escape: #InTheHeights is the big, splashy movie-musical I was hoping it'd be. It's joyful, it will make you want to dance and sing (and cry if you're me!). I want to see it again ASAP on the biggest screen possible.

#IntheHeights manages to be something completely new and magical while also channeling the best of the big movie musical golden age. pic.twitter.com/WkJOXu1IdG

Time to talk about #InTheHeights! It's hard to express how deeply Leslie Grace's performance of "Breathe" resonated w/ me. Brought me to tears, y'all. 😭 That idea of being your parents' American dream is something every child of immigrants—regardless of culture—can relate to. pic.twitter.com/9FsrWRndtH

Just watched an early screening of #InTheHeights and I cannot stop SOBBINGGGG. The community, the support, the representation, the LOVE! Can’t wait to watch this in theatres this summer thank you @jonmchu!! Hear me, SAG best ensemble and Olga Merediz for best supporting actress! pic.twitter.com/is6WSqGodI

The movie was incredible.
The acting was incredible.
The music was incredible.
The choreography was incredible.
The cinamatography was incredible.
My escape to Washington Heights was incredible.— Bridget Conway (she/her/hers) (@dadiva18) April 16, 2021
#InTheHeights is everything i’ve ever wanted in a stage-to-screen adaptation bc it showcases the spectacle of musical theater by unapologetically using the bolder tools of film. it’s v clear that @jonmchu respects both mediums equally, as he brought out the best of each 🙌

Yeah, believe any and all hype about IN THE HEIGHTS. It's that good. Not just a massive leap in Latinx representation, it may just go down as one of the finest love letters to New York. Practically every single thing, from the music to its choreography, is perfect. #InTheHeights pic.twitter.com/hiVKIve0R6

IN THE HEIGHTS! WOW! This is deserves to be THE movie of the summer. It's a fun, energetic, incredibly directed, and colorful music epic that deserves to be seen on the biggest screen. It's a beautiful love letter to the Latinx dreamers of NYC. One of the best films of 2021. pic.twitter.com/RCrGFk9UjA

The #InTheHeightsMovie social embargo just lifted & here are thoughts. @jonmchu made a movie-musical that actually embraced the fact that it’s a movie-musical. And leaned into it, too, which is so refreshing. (1/)

#InTheHeights is gorgeous and has a dynamite opening. Latino voices have arrived (we were already here).
If you loved Yuh-Jung Youn this year, get ready to fall in love with Olga Merediz, the first supporting actress contender of the year. Leslie Grace is another breakout! . pic.twitter.com/4nOwhCZ3IW

Got an early look at #InTheHeightsMovie. Never saw the musical, knew almost nothing about it, but I was totally floored by the love and life bursting from this movie. @jonmchu directed the hell out of it. I hope people get to (safely) see it on a big screen. If not, TURN IT UP.

#InTheHeightsMovie’s ensemble is out-of-this-world stellar: Ramos & Hawkins turn in top shelf performances. Rubin-Vega, Polanco & Beatriz are dynamically forceful. Merediz is a graceful powerhouse (nom’d for a Tony!). Barrera & Grace give star-defining, touching turns. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/YTep2ZekMU
