Emilia Clarke Came Up With a 'Game of Thrones' Speech In Valyrian In Just 10 Minutes

Despite Game of Thrones having been over for a year, there are still factoids coming out about the stars of the show.

In a new interview, director Jeremy Podeswa opened up about the time that Emilia Clarke seriously impressed him by coming up with a full speech in Valyrian in just ten minutes.

The scene in question was the one where Daenerys ordered the execution of one of three Meereenese noblemen who had been thought to have conspired against her. In the original script, Daenerys delivers a speech in English.

However, the showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss thought it would be even better if the speech was in Valyrian.

If you recall, the dialogue for the fictional language is scripted months in advance. However, Emilia pulled it off in just ten minutes.

“There’s usually a lot of preparation for that sort of thing and so much consideration that goes into it and she had quite a big monologue before she sets the guy on fire,” Jeremy added. “I went over to Emilia and I was like, ‘I know this is a really big ask, but do you think you could figure out a way to do this in Valyrian?’ She said, ‘Yeah, sure, I think I can do this.’ And I’m all, “Really?” Then she went off and cobbled together things that [Daenerys] had said in the past that made sense. She came back in 10 minutes and had this whole monologue down.”

He continued, recalling just how amazing Emilia was in the show, “I just had to hand it to Emilia for taking on the challenge and making it completely credible.”

“Every single take, every intonation, and the way she phrased everything, you completely understood what she was meant to be saying. Then the subtitles all seemed authentic to what she was doing. She knew the language well enough at that point to make it all work. It wasn’t tracking perfectly in Valyrian, but no fan ever noticed it. She did an amazing job.”

More recently, other stars have been speaking out about the could have been situations in the show and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau even called one of Emilia‘s scenes “degrading”.
